Jessica Moss (CAN) + WOLF

41650119_10155688037257551_4206586438235455488_o.jpg

Montreal violinist Jessica Moss has performed and recorded with a wide spectrum of ensembles over the last two decades. Best known as a permanent member of Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, she was also a founding member of avant-klezmer group Black Ox Orkestar, recorded and toured with the Vic Chesnutt band for the two albums released on Constellation, and worked extensively with Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista. She has also performed and recorded as a guest with many of Montreal’s best known artists, most recently with Big|Brave on their acclaimed 2016 record for Southern Lord. She was featured in Jem Cohen’s Empires of Tin project, and joined members of Godspeed, Fugazi, White Magic and Dirty Three to perform the live score to Cohen’s film We Have An Anchor in various locations at Europe and the USA.

Though she’s been playing violin practically her entire life, Jessica has always felt most at home in a collaborative setting and has been steadfastly devoted to the practice of ensemble playing. This has generally meant creation 'in the service of': the other parts being played, the lyrics being sung, the structure of the song, and/or the recording and mixing at hand. The practices inherent in group creation and performance inform her very person in many ways and have given her a deep understanding and respect for both group dynamics and 'working communities' in general.

Moss’ catalyst to create solo work was a 2014 virtual collaboration with Olympia, USA musician Kevin Doria, who creates intensely rich and layered minimalist drone music under the moniker Total Life and with his bands Growing and Hiss Tracts. Simultaneously she was commissioned by La Biennale de Montréal to create a site specific composition that reflected on the theme of the 2014 exhibition.

Alone in her practice space equipped with the tools, methods, and experiences gleaned from years in studios, rehearsal spaces, performing and touring, Jessica commenced building her unique style and structure. The music that came was longform and narrative, conjuring images with sounds and melodies and occasional lyrics, and telling exigent stories of troubled times. Written by ear and memory and never committed to paper, Moss conceives for live performance, where she makes use of violin, a myriad of pedals, a microphone, and three amplifiers.

Moss’s first solo recordings came in the form of a self-released cassette entitled Under Plastic Island (2015), a beautiful, swirling meditation on the island of plastic trash floating in the ocean, the result of a trip to Brooklyn during which she spent time in the basement recording studio of friend and occasional collaborator Guy Picciotto (Fugazi). In 2017 she released her first solo LP on Constellation, Pools of Light, recorded with kindred spirit Radwan Ghazi Moumneh. Comprised of two side-length multi-movement compositions, it is a stunning work that unfolds at a stately, inexorable pace, combining sound-art and signal-processed timbres, extended melodic and contrapuntal lines, and the periodic deployment of stark, minimalist vocals.

Since the release of Pools Of Light, Moss has been newly ascendant as a live soloist, captivating audiences with her gritty, warmly expressive electronic- and drone-inflected post-classical Minimalism (and sometimes Maximalism), accented by a distinctive melodic sensibility that channels Klezmer, Balkan and Middle Eastern tropes. Moss has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, playing over 80 shows in 2017-2018, including festival appearances at Big Ears, WSO New Music, Le Guess Who?, ATP, Zemlika and Supersonic, participation in multiple editions of Basilica Hudson’s 24-Hour Drone Fest, and a mix of headlining and support dates with the likes of Zu, BIG|BRAVE (on whose most recent album she also plays), GAS, Xylouris White, and labelmates Godspeed You! Black Emperor among many others. Moss recently collaborated with Angel Deradoorian, Nick Zinner, Clarice Jensen, and Francesco Donadello as part of a residency at Berlin’s PEOPLE festival, and composed the score for the Fact Award-winning documentary Laila at the Bridge. Heading into 2019, she will be collaborating with Roy Montgomery as well as composing and performing the live score for “DUST,” a new production from award-winning Australian dance company Dancenorth. Moss also creates all her own video work to accompany her solo music.

SUPPORT FROM WOLF
WOLF, is a project from composer/producer; Kim Moore. With live strings and voice, WOLF travels through minimal ghostly orchestral worlds with walls of distorted noise and electronic driven song. Kim Moore also makes collaborative work as a composer and sound designer in theatre/dance/film. Astro Children
From their humble beginnings as a late-teenage three piece in Dunedin, wanting to play punk music, to the two piece and armada of guitar pedals you’ve very much heard of present day, Dunedin’s Astro Children have been one of the success stories to emerge from the city’s art-space, The Attic.

Astro Children happen to be one of those acts with a magnitude of potential that, we know doubt believe, they can live up to.

Ola Tortuga Presents: All The Best Tapes + Last Hyena

43318867_759095167756455_4244664905317220352_o.jpg

Ola Tortuga in association with Bloc+ proudly present:

All The Best Tapes - https://www.facebook.com/allthebesttapes/

Blossoming to life in late 2010 from the underbelly of the post-industrial wasteland of Stoke, UK as a vocal driven, three piece progressive punk rock outfit and going through as many different permutations in as many years, All The Best Tapes have evolved into a heady and unabashedly indulgent “Thrash Jazz” instrumental piece of living machinery with four constant key members.

All The Best Tapes have shared the stage with the likes of: Vasudeva, Delta Sleep, Lite, TTNG, Night Verses and City of Ifa.

After releasing their “Perfect Hibernation/Calle De La Cruces” Double A-Side 7” on Sunbird Records in 2016, ATBT set to work on writing a follow to 2014’s Bob Cooper produced self titled album.

"APEX EMOTION" tells the story of RED SNAKE; a world champion racing driver and international playboy who finds himself in cryogenic stasis after a near fatal accident on the track, only to awaken three-hundred and thirty-three years in the future to a nightmarish cyberpunk megacity. He vows to return to the thrill of the race in this foreign time and compete in the PHANTOMILE at the WATER PALACE HYPER RACEWAY but standing in his way is the dominant force in future hyper racing, KING OF SWINE.

The band returned to Lower Lane Studios with long time friend and powerhouse producer Sam Bloor over the summer of 2018 to meticulously craft a new listening experience. "APEX EMOTION" will be released on November 9th on all digital platforms and a limited edition USB.

Last Hyena - https://www.facebook.com/lasthyena/

Fresh on the scene, Bristol trio Last Hyena have been turning heads with their combination sound of delicate Math that has crushing, undeniable Post Rock influences coursing through it. They're quickly becoming one of the most hard working bands in the city, gigging constantly over the past year gearing up to the release of their highly anticipated second EP 'I Remember the Future', recorded by Tom Peters of Alpha Male Tea Party earlier this year.

Ola Tortuga Presents: Verse Metrics + Catalan!

42922261_10155729669277551_5519003331495723008_o.jpg

Ola Tortuga Presents:

Verse Metrics are a Glasgow based 4 piece with a knack for writing twisty, turny emo/post rock songs. Combining a sound closely related to post-punk revivalists like Interpol and I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness with a mathy, angular soundscape akin to bands such as Polvo, Verse Metrics are anything but your typical indie-rock band.

New single 'The Nightmares Leave Us All Inoperational' was produced by Tom Peters (The Fall, Alpha Male Tea Party, Hyena Kill) and follows the success of their wonderful 2016 EP We’ll Be Listening and Remembering Until We’re Old and Unsteady (Lonely Voyage Records).

"Verse Metrics not only create powerful and potent music, they carry a deeper message within their songs." Punktastic

Support from:

CATALAN! create world influenced music with an experimental and eclectic edge. Having spent the last seven years exploring the open road, with various bands and companions including ‘Axis Of’ and ‘And So I Watch You From Afar’, Ewen Friers dedicated the early part of 2017 to condensing his experiences and interests into a thought provoking new musical project which resulted in last year’s debut release ‘Oka’.

“a spiky, melodic punch – with shimmering guitars, a scuzzy bassline and some brilliant post-punk percussion” – Keep It Fast

Snack Family

43377913_2321579224522941_977717552241180672_o.jpg

Snack Family’s new album ‘Bunny’ is being release on Slowfoot Records on Fri 5th Oct so we're off on our most significant UK tour yet..

In part this is fast-forward music with an energy build-up like a fuse about to blow; in others there's a complex melancholy underpinned by motorik beats, twisting and droning...a dark tender side demonstrating that there’s more to Snack Family than breakneck propulsion.

With bad moons rising on both sides of the Atlantic, this is no time to be anodyne. Bunny is the sort of hard stuff that's needed right now, the bracing antidote in the year of the fightback.

Megalomatic + Lion On Tiger

37800368_1689401727776203_379614979424256_n.jpg

Fresh from their single release Coil via Milky Bomb Records, a headline show at The Cathouse, supporting Soulfly and a UK tour. Megalomaticbring the riffs to Bloc+ for an intimate show. Support comes from the incredible Lion On Tiger from Edinburgh.

Lineup:

Megalomatic
https://megalomatic.bandcamp.com/album/coil

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VCczRrxONg

Powerful, progressive, face melting riffs packed full of passion and controlled emotion.

Formed in Glasgow, 2013, by guitarist/vocalist Craig McKenzie, drummer Jamie Barnes and bassist Ben Reffin, Megalomatic (Milky Bomb Records) sing about real life issues and they do so with equal parts muscle and heart. With an average age of twenty-one,
the power trio, whose music might come across as a mixture of Biffy Clyro by way of Mastodon, have proven over the course of their young career, that heavy music can have profound emotional resonance. While Megalomatic can play it dark, fast and heavy, their songs have surprising breaks and shifts that catch the listener off guard and beg for repeat listens.

"I'm not seeing a bunch of Biffy, but it is wicked!"
Daniel P. Carter, Radio 1 Rock Show

"...ferocious, riff-tastic tour-de-force..."
Martin Williams, Evening Times

“Electrifyingly atmospheric…”
Miff Morris, Louder Than War

"Fans of Mastodon, Black Peaks and Reuben should take notice..."
James Fitzgerald, MOSH

Lion On Tiger
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCkwsoXHAn4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEWUXuvaVCw

Lion On Tiger are a 4 piece alternative rock band from Edinburgh. They are characterised by intense live performances that marry guitar centric melodic compositions and crashing riffery. Vocally they are volatile in terms of delivery which juxtaposes their willingness to delve into humourous and often times self deprecating content. Their debut EP, 'Quickly, Before The Rush' was released last year and they expect to have new material out in the coming weeks, as indicated by the recent release of the music video for 'Hugging High'.

Draws Creature Mask + Luthia + Blair Coron

42943830_10155729621972551_9160696515407118336_o.jpg

Draws Creature Mask is the cryptic moniker of four musicians hailing from various places across Scotland and England. Borrowing musical tricks from an endless list of influences, the band write intricate and ambitious songs, creating a dense sound world that evokes experimental and indie rock heroes such as Radiohead, Mogwai, The National and The Twilight Sad. Across their various inceptions they have shared the stage with the likes of Alpha Male Tea Party, Polymath, Verse Metrics and Peaks.

"It is refreshing to see a new band unafraid of experimentation and prog-like song length. It seems to be that while many bands aim to refine and become more concise, Draws Creature Mask are doing the exact opposite. Maybe that’s exactly what we need right now." - Overblown Magazine

Support from Luthia

Luthia are an experimental art-rock trio with a voice that ties together an instrumental weave. Together they explore the terrain of song, ambience, silence and harmony.

And Blair Coron:

Blair Coron is a musician and composer residing in Glasgow blending the borders between contemporary classical music, ambience, electronics, folk and poetry. With the aid of an 6-piece string ensemble accompanying his piano compositions Blair’s primary intention is to create enchanting atmospheres that sets course for introspection and meditation.

The Blas Collective

From Glasgow’s folk music hive of activity, the Blas Collective emerged in 2009 as a jam with a few friends.  Since then it has become an eclectic evening of folk, jazz, country, blues and some pop covers too.  Hosted by singers Jenn Butterworth, Laura-Beth Salter and Hamish Napier, expect to hear songs from the heart-wrenchingly sad to the just plain ridiculous.  Joined by fiddler Adam Sutherland, percussionist Steve Forman and often a few other musical pals, the group jam from basic charts and create on-the-spot arrangements, guaranteeing that every night will be a different experience – which is just the way Bloc+ likes it!

Bloc+Jam Open Mic

27544804_10155154431072551_3753797286747138445_n.jpg

For the last few years Bloc+ has been running one of Glasgow’s most popular and consistently high-quality open mic nights, thanks largely to  Jamie Sturt and friends, not to mention our incredibly gifted and facially pleasing clientele.

The gear is all ready to go so, if you’re fed up spending Sunday nights apprehensively contemplating the weekdays of early morning traffic, water-cooler small-talk, dole-office appointments or car theft, pop along and enjoy Bloc’s warm atmosphere and cold beverages. Or is it cold atmosphere and warm beverages…?

There will also now be a free beverage in exchange for a performance from you fine folk! If you want a free water that is also available too.
